World class solidity proven to be head butt proof

World class solidity proven to be head butt proof

Not content with one advert showing how tough Marco Matterazzi is, Nike has announced a new marketing campaign to celebrate the recent Italian World Cup triumph.

The New York Times reports on a new Nike advertising campaign featuring Fabio Cannavaro, Andrea Pirlo, Gianluca Zambrotta and of course Marco Materazzi.

"Print ads, done in the style of classic Italian advertising posters of the 1940s, 50s and 60s, depict Nike-sponsored players in mock versions of iconic Italian products.

A beaming likeness of Mr. Cannavaro, for instance, promotes the Coppa Cannavaro, a would-be gelato brand that, according to the poster, is the envy of the world.

What, other than a bit of envy, does this have to do with the French? The posters include a tagline stating that the advertised products are produit en Italie. Yes, thats French for made in Italy, a sly nudge unlikely to be lost on either country."

One of the adverts, which is for a new-line of Italian-made soccer shoes, depicts Materazzi as a piece of fictional furniture with the slogan: "Solidit mondiale testata a prova di testate" ("World-class solidity, proven to be head-butt-proof").

The adverts can be seen here.

In England, Paul Scholes is being called upon by gay rights groups to apologise, after allegedly making homophobic remarks during the Champions League game with Benfica. Scholes apparently called Petit a "fucking poof" after being booked for a tackle on the Benfica midfielder.

This comes only a few weeks after AC Milan striker Gilardino gave an interview to a gay media outlet. Whilst Scholes will no doubt be criticised for comments which are heard on football pitches around the globe, it should be hoped that the misfiring (sorry!) Milan forward is also praised for his contribution in battling homophobia in football.
